How does Steele Canyon becoming a charter high school affect my student’s
…classes?
•Converting to a charter school will give SCHS the academic freedom to strengthen award-winning programs and develop new courses that will broaden and enhance the overall curriculum.
•SCHS will remain committed to offering a range of courses to students, including College Preparatory, Honors, and Advanced Placement selections. SCHS has open access to Honors and AP classes. Students are expected to push themselves academically and are encouraged to take the most rigorous courses available. The core curriculum at SCHS is designed to prepare students for the academic demands of college.
…schedule?
•SCHS will continue to operate on a college-style block system, consisting of two academic terms. Students study humanities (English and social science) in one term and math and science in the other term. Schedules are supplemented in both terms with electives and other required courses. Students attend three 90 minute classes per day, allowing them to focus on three classes at a time rather than the traditional six.
…sports?
•Sports will not be affected by the charter conversion. SCHS will continue to be a member of the Grossmont South Athletic League and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
…extra-curricular activities?
•SCHS will continue to offer the same complement of extra-curricular programs, clubs and activities currently in place.
…transportation?
•Steele Canyon will continue to use the Grossmont Union High School bus system and its current routes.
…academic support?
•After-school tutorials are held regularly for most subject areas. These tutorials will continue as SCHS becomes a charter school. Students will be informed about the days and times of tutorials during the first week of classes.
How will attendance eligibility be determined?
•All currently enrolled SCHS students and their incoming siblings as well as any students living within the SCHS 2006-2007 attendance boundaries as established by the Grossmont Union High School District, including ‘option’ areas, will be eligible to attend SCHS.
•Students living outside the SCHS attendance boundaries who wish to attend SCHS will be eligible to enroll as space permits. These students will be selected by a lottery system. The lottery will be public, and results will be made available before the GUHSD ‘Choice’ lottery so that students not selected in the SCHS lottery can apply to the GUHSD ‘Choice’ lottery. In order to be included in the SCHS lottery, a parent/guardian must call Steele Canyon at 619-660-7100, ext 141 and speak to Mrs. Jaggard by 3:30 pm on March 7, 2007. The public lottery will be held the following week.
Is SCHS an accredited school?
•As a charter school, SCHS will continue to be a fully accredited high school under the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
